What are you currently reading?

I remember reading “The Lottery” in high school (maybe it was in 12th grade) and loving the way it was written and being blown away by the story, yet somehow I have never read anything else by Shirley Jackson. This book initially made its way onto my TBR list because it’s short and I’d seen it on several lists of books women should read. From the first paragraph or so, I was hooked. What I’ve loved the most, besides the beautiful writing, is that it immediately pulls you into wanting to know this family’s story.

What did you recently finish reading?

Usually, I would include the last book that I finished, but I’ve posted a review of it, so I thought I would mention Everybody Rise by Stephanie Clifford. This is Clifford’s debut novel and I received it from House Party/Chatterbox in exchange for an honest review. Overall, I enjoyed the book, but there were some times that it literally put me to sleep and I eventually began to speed through it to get to the end. The ending went somewhere a bit different than I thought it was going to go, but I appreciated that. Since finishing the book, I’ve realized that parts of it were a lot better than I originally felt while reading it. It seems like this book is highly anticipated, so I’m glad that I got the opportunity to read it early. If I had to compare it to anything, I would say it’s similar to Gossip Girl for adults and Nicola Kraus and Emma McLaughlin. Not bad company, if you ask me.

What do you think you’ll read next?

I’m planning on reading Rebel Heart by Michelle Moran next. One of my favorite genres this year has been historical fiction, especially about women in history, so when I saw this on Goodreads, I immediately put it on my holds list at the library. I’m looking forward to reading it as it’s a 2015 book and I honestly know nothing about this time period in India. When reading historical fiction, I usually know at least a little something about the people involved or the era – like the Tudor era – but I’m going into this one without any idea what happened at that time. I will be going in with an open mind that it is fiction, just like I do every other time I read historical fiction.

Note: I’m aware that Should Be Reading has moved since the last time I was blogging, but I’ve been unable to access it. They’re now at adailyrhythm.com and I’m currently unsure if they’re still hosting this feature.
